CALI, a San Diego idea built on bamboo
CALI started with two college friends working part-time jobs on Kauai, Hawaii. Jeff Goldberg and Tanner Haigwood spent some of that time around bamboo and had the same thought: it is incredibly strong, it grows fast, and almost nobody in the United States was using it for flooring. In 2004 they founded Cali Bamboo in San Diego, California, selling strand-woven bamboo direct to customers.
The company grew fast and landed on the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing U.S. companies for 12 years running. As the line expanded beyond bamboo into waterproof vinyl plank, engineered hardwood, and outdoor decking, the bamboo-only name no longer fit. In 2019 the company rebranded as simply CALI, keeping its relaxed, California-casual design sensibility.
In 2021, Victoria PLC, a British flooring company founded in 1895 and listed on the London Stock Exchange, acquired CALI. CALI kept its San Diego design team and runs as a subsidiary, with access to broader manufacturing partnerships while holding on to its own identity in North America.
CALI's waterproof vinyl plank fits Florida living naturally, and the designs lean toward the easy, natural looks that work with the light and open layouts common in Polk County homes. For homeowners who want an eco-conscious story behind the floor, the bamboo collections are a good conversation, since bamboo can be reharvested in a handful of years rather than decades.
