An American flooring legacy
Armstrong Flooring, a storied name now made by AHF
Thomas Armstrong started a two-man cork-cutting shop in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1860. The company made bottle corks and insulation until Armstrong saw opportunity in flooring. In 1909 the first Armstrong linoleum came off the presses at a new factory in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and that address stayed the company's home for more than a century. Armstrong went on to develop resilient sheet vinyl, vinyl composition tile, and a long list of products familiar to generations of homeowners and contractors.
The flooring division was spun off as Armstrong Flooring, Inc. in 2016. The independent company hit a difficult stretch after the pandemic, and in May 2022 it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. A court approved the sale of its North American assets to AHF Products and a partner for 107 million dollars, and Armstrong Flooring stopped operating as a standalone company that July.
AHF Products, based in Mountville, Pennsylvania, acquired the Armstrong Flooring brand license along with U.S. manufacturing facilities. AHF is the largest hardwood flooring manufacturer in North America and has expanded into vinyl plank, laminate, and commercial resilient. Under AHF, the Armstrong Flooring name continues on luxury vinyl tile, VCT, rigid core, and commercial sheet vinyl. Note that AHF does not assume warranty responsibility for products made before July 2022.
The Armstrong name still carries real weight in the trade, especially in commercial and builder work, and Florida contractors recognize it on sight. At Blackburn's we work mainly with the luxury vinyl and resilient products AHF produces under the label today.
