Lake Wales is about 30 minutes south of our Winter Haven showroom on US-27. It is our farthest city in terms of drive time, but it is firmly within our regular service area. We do countertops, cabinets, and flooring in Lake Wales on a regular basis. The distance is not a barrier.
What makes Lake Wales interesting from a design standpoint is that it has two very different kitchen markets in the same city. Historic neighborhoods along Park Ave, Central Ave, and the downtown historic district have bungalows and older homes where the kitchen needs a countertop that works with the character of the house. And Lake Ashton, the gated golf community south of downtown, has elevated expectations and a buyer profile that wants premium materials. The right countertop for each setting is not always the same.
Historic bungalows: reading the house before choosing the surface
The historic neighborhoods of Lake Wales, particularly around Park Ave, Central Ave, and the downtown district near Bok Tower, have homes that predate most of Polk County's suburban development. Craftsman bungalows from the 1920s, 30s, and 40s. Florida vernacular homes with wide porches, original wood floors, and kitchens that were designed around an older way of cooking. These homes have a character that deserves respect.
Choosing a countertop for a historic bungalow kitchen is a design conversation, not just a material comparison. The wrong choice is a stark contemporary quartz with a mitered waterfall edge in a kitchen with bead board walls and original wood cabinetry. The materials fight the architecture. The right choice reads with what the house already is.
Granite with warm movement, traditional profiles, and natural variation is one of the best materials for historic Lake Wales kitchens. The organic character of real stone complements the handmade quality of older construction. Beige, warm brown, and cream granites with a bullnose or half-bullnose edge profile feel correct in a Craftsman kitchen. The natural movement of the stone echoes the character of the house without trying to replicate a period style artificially.
Quartz is a strong choice in historic kitchens too, but the selection matters. A simple white or cream quartz in a warm tone with a clean eased or half-bullnose edge reads as a respectful update rather than a jarring contrast. The key is avoiding the contemporary end of the quartz design range. stark whites with geometric veining and mitered edges belong in a 2024 slab-door kitchen, not an original 1930s bungalow. Cambria has collections that work well here: the traditional end of their range, with warmer tones and organic movement.
Laminate is a reasonable option for historic bungalows with constrained budgets or for utility kitchens in properties being rented or maintained at lower cost. Modern laminate in a stone print is a clean, period-neutral choice that avoids the dated look of original linoleum without requiring the investment of stone. For a primary kitchen being renovated with long-term intent, quartz or granite is the better investment.
Lake Ashton: premium expectations in a gated golf community
Lake Ashton is a gated 55-plus golf community south of downtown Lake Wales. It has its own community page on our site at /communities/lake-ashton/. The homes there are newer construction with larger kitchens, higher ceilings, and a buyer profile that expects premium materials. Lake Ashton kitchens are not the same conversation as a bungalow update.
Cambria is particularly popular in Lake Ashton. The lifetime warranty and distinctive design range give Lake Ashton homeowners a premium product that fits the community's finish level. Collections like Brittanicca Warm and White Cliff have the sophisticated veining and warmth that work well in larger kitchens with traditional or transitional design directions. For homeowners who want a striking slab as a focal point, Cambria's Inverness and Galloway collections deliver the visual impact.
Granite is an excellent choice for Lake Ashton kitchens where the owner loves natural stone. The variety of available slabs means every kitchen can be unique. In a community where neighbors compare kitchens, a dramatic granite slab. something with real depth and movement. stands out. The annual sealing is the maintenance commitment. For Lake Ashton homeowners doing a full kitchen renovation, that is usually an easy trade-off for the look and longevity of real stone.
Quartz is the most practical choice for Lake Ashton homeowners who want zero-maintenance performance at a premium-leaning price point. White quartz or light gray quartz with a refined edge profile fits the contemporary-traditional blend that most Lake Ashton kitchens have. No sealing, no maintenance, consistent appearance over time.
For full kitchen projects in Lake Ashton, coordinating countertops with cabinets and flooring together produces the most cohesive result. Lake Ashton kitchens are large enough that the three elements read as a single room, and choosing them separately often produces inconsistencies that are hard to fix after the fact.
Bok Tower area and Iron Mountain homes
The area around Bok Tower Gardens and Iron Mountain carries some of Lake Wales's most distinctive residential architecture. Homes in this area tend to lean traditional, with designs that reflect the history and character of the landscape. The Iron Mountain elevation, the highest point in peninsular Florida, has attracted historically minded architecture.
For kitchens in this area, the same design principle applies as in the historic bungalows: the countertop should read with the house, not against it. Granite with natural movement, quartz in warm tones with traditional profiles, or Cambria's more traditional collections are all appropriate. The contemporary end of the quartz range can feel out of place in homes where the architecture is deliberate about character.
Florida humidity in Lake Wales kitchens
Lake Wales shares Polk County's climate. Humid summers, high overnight humidity, and the on-off cycling of central air that creates daily variation. The city sits slightly inland, so it does not have the same lakeside humidity amplification as the lake communities to the north, but the ambient humidity is still real.
Quartz and Cambria are non-porous and unaffected by humidity. Granite with annual sealing performs well in Lake Wales kitchens. The risk is the same as anywhere in Polk County: skip the sealing cycle and the pores are exposed, particularly around the sink. For historic home kitchens where the renovation may not be re-done for another 20 years, getting the sealing right and staying on schedule matters.
Laminate is more susceptible to edge damage from moisture over time than stone. For Lake Wales kitchens with regular Florida humidity exposure, stone is the longer-lasting investment.
