Process of Buying New Flooring

Table of Contents

One of the biggest decisions you’ll make is choosing new flooring when you’re looking at upgrading your home’s appearance. There’s so many options available that it can be overwhelming. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the process of buying new flooring.

Step 1: Set a Budget

Before you start shopping for new flooring, it’s important to set a budget. Flooring prices can vary depending on the material you choose and the size of your space. If you’re on a tight budget, consider lower-cost options like sheet vinyl or carpet. If you have more to spend, hardwood, LVP or tile flooring can be a great investment.

Step 2: Choose the Right Material

The next step is to choose the right flooring material for your space. Some of the most popular options include:

  • Hardwood: Hardwood flooring is a classic choice that adds warmth and character. It’s durable and can be refinished multiple times, but it can also be expensive.

  • Laminate: Laminate flooring is a budget-friendly alternative to hardwood that mimics the look of wood. It’s durable and easy to clean, but it can’t be refinished.

  • Luxury Vinyl Plank: LVP flooring is a versatile option that comes in a range of styles and colors. It’s easy to install and maintain.  But, depending on the wear layer of the product it can be prone to scratching. We recommend going with a 12-mil wear layer for residential and a 20-mil wear layer for commercial applications. We take a deeper dive into LVP in this blog post.

  • Tile: Tile flooring is durable and comes in a variety of materials, including ceramic, porcelain, and natural stone. It’s water-resistant and easy to clean. But, it can be cold and hard underfoot.

  • Carpet: Carpet is a comfortable and cozy choice that’s great for bedrooms and living areas. It’s available in a range of textures and colors, but it can be prone to staining and wear and wearing out quicker.

Step 3: Measure Your Space

Once you’ve chosen a flooring material, it’s time to measure!  This will help you determine how much flooring you need to buy and give you an idea of how much it will cost. Make sure to measure the length and width of each room, and will be sure to account for any nooks, closets, or alcoves. You will need to account for cuts, or seams if doing carpet. This is also called “waste”. But, it’s necessary for having enough material to complete your project.

Step 4: Choose a Style and Color

Now that you’ve chosen a material and measured your space, it’s time to choose a style and color. Flooring comes in a range of styles, from traditional to modern, and a variety of colors. Consider the existing decor in your space and choose a style and color that complements it. We always have the most current and best selling trends here in our 8,000 square foot showroom to help you decide.

Step 5: Take Samples Home

Bringing flooring samples home into your lighting will make a big difference in your decision.  What the samples look like in the showroom of our store, may look different once you get them into the lighting of the room it’s going in.  We encourage you to keep them a couple of days so that you can see what they look like at different times of the day. Especially if the room has lots of natural lighting.

Step 6: Prepare Your Space

Before your new flooring is installed, you’ll need to get the room ready for installation. This may involve moving furniture, clearing the room of debris, and making sure that the subfloor is clean and level.

Step 7: Install Your New Flooring

Once your space is prepped, it’s time to install your new flooring. This can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days depending on the size of your space and the complexity of the installation.

Step 8: Maintain Your New Flooring

After your new flooring is installed, it’s important to maintain it properly.  We encourage to follow the manufacturers instructions for maintenance.  For carpet cleaning, keep all receipts of when it is professionally cleaned.  If you need any help finding the maintenance instructions, please reach out to us and we will be happy to help!

The process of buying flooring can be a tricky situation with many different factors that go in to it.  But, refer back to this step-by-step process to help walk you through the process! As always, we are here if you need us! Thanks for reading!
